Dr Kin-Cheung Mak is an experienced spine surgeon with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry. The interest in research and education was built upon his pharmacology honours program at Vancouver’s University of British Columbia and solidified with the completion of his medical training at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Subsequently, he undertook a clinical attachment at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto and a spine fellowship at Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital in UK.
Dr Mak worked in the Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology of Queen Mary Hospital (QMH), the teaching hospital for HKU from 2000 - 2017, and was with the Spine Division from 2008 - 2017. From 2014 - 2017, he led and developed the spine service at the University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Hospital, a 2000-bed hospital which was a pioneering joint venture with the Chinese government that opened in 2012.
As a scholar at HKU, he received 8 awards for his/his team’s research, published 22 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, presented 91 conference papers, and delivered 38 guest lectures/keynote talks (Welcome to visit HKU Scholar’s Hub - http://hub.hku.hk/cris/rp/rp01957). Just before Dr Mak went to private practice in Sep 2017, he helped his research student graduate in the top quartile. Apart from teaching spine diseases and surgery to medical students at HKU, he had been the intern supervisor/coordinator for the Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology of QMH for 10 years. His dedication toward sharing & exchange of knowledge also led him to be invited to many local, regional and international spine conferences and academic events.
He was elected Chairman of AOSpine (an international education & research organization) East Asia in 2016, after serving as Council Officer for Spine Centers and Fellowship 2010 - 2014. His volunteer work led to the nomination to the executive council of Osteoporosis Society of Hong Kong in 2012 and the executive council of Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation in 2014. As a result of the standard and service he had rendered at the University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Hospital, he was asked to join various professional spine societies and monitoring bodies in China in 2016.
